Looking For Action? Most Volatile Stocks
For traders with a more short-term time horizon, we have compiled a list of the S&P 1500 stocks that have the largest intraday high-low ranges (based on the average percent spread between the intraday high and low over the last fifty days). We then grouped the stocks based on whether they have a rising or falling 50-day moving average. Stocks highlighted in gray are new to the list this month.
As shown in the table, companies from the Financial sector dominate the list of most volatile stocks in both uptrends (rising 50-day) and downtrends (falling 50-day). AIG is probably the most notable stock on the list, as it currently has the highest average intraday percentage range in the S&P 1500. It shows how fast things have changed in the stock market. A year ago today, AIG was the 12th largest stock in the United States and a member of the Dow Jones. Today, it is nothing more than a glorified penny stock that is 80% owned by the government.
