China Medical Technologies (CMED) received SFDA approval for its Breast Cancer HER2 FISH probe. Breast cancer patients are routinely tested for overexpression of HER2 protein because overexpression is associated with a higher incidence of recurrence and also predicts a better response to Genentech’s (DNA) breast cancer drug, Herceptin.

China Medical Technologies manufactures a number of FISH (Fluorescent in situ Hybridization) tests. It recently paid $345 million for a HPV diagnostic test, indicating that the potential market FISH probes can be very large. It is the first company in China to be given SFDA approval for FISH probes. China Medical said the HER2 probe will allow the company to begin commercial promotion of its probes and for hospitals to apply for insurance reimbursement of the tests.
