Monthly spending at eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY) is down 30% from January through October 2008. Geezeo customers spent an average of $163.56 during October, compared to $232.50 spent in January 2008.
This data is according to the new Main Street Spending Index (MSSI) compiled by Geezeo, a personal finance Web site that helps consumers track their spending.

The number of transactions has remained strong at approximately 2.5 purchases per month. However, the amount spent per transaction has decreased significantly from $95.05 in January, to $63.92.

Sales are up at local resale shops nationwide. According to the national Association of Resale & Thrift Shops, 62.5% of its members reported higher sales in August. Goodwill has seen a 6% increase in retail sales for the first seven months of 2008 versus the same period in 2007.
With more people searching for a bargain, customer spend at eBay may stay at deflated levels until the economy turns. However, given their strong customer loyalty and retention, eBay is poised to make a comeback once the economy turns.

How can people buy IT if they can't find IT? And if they do find IT then they have to wait forever for IT to arrive due to the insane 21+ day holds Paypal places on seller accounts while they earn money on the float.
Pretty soon buyers won't be able to find IT at all because sellers are leaving in droves as a direct result of Donahoe's disruptive innovations.
Anyone with additional funds should be buying up EBAY at these levels. Even though EBAY’s growth has slowed, they’re still tremendously profitable; have tons of cash; doing stock buybacks; the paypal is really profitable; skype should become more profitable and keeps growing tremendously; etc... etc... Also, with Craigslist, you’re taking your chances that the seller is legite. You have no protections. So EBAY is really the best place in many respects. Stock closed @ $12.36
Blah, blah, blah......
Customer loyalty? Are you kidding? What desert do you have your head buried in? Have you seen the “customer loyalty” on the discussion boards? Not one person has anything good to say about eBay. NOBODY!
Here’s a link to “customer loyalty”, it’s called Seller Central: forums.ebay.com/db2/fo...
I’m assuming that you are referring to the sellers being eBay’s customers? You must be, since eBay carrys no inventory the buyers are the sellers customers, and eBay’s customers are the sellers, who pay the all the fees.
If eBay were anything like the "great deal" marketplace it once was, people would have never stopped spending, regardless of market trends. The sad fact is eBay is simply TOO GREEDY and therefore TOO EXPENSIVE!
The sellers have been forced to accept PayPal ONLY (an eBay company which benefits tremendously from the no paper payments policy, ex; NO checks, money orders, etc...), and that means an additional 2.9% or more added to the Buyers price. Add a 15% Final Value Fee to items sold and that equates to a near 18% hike in prices for the buyer, and this is not including listing fees, store fees, picture fees, conversion fees etc... the list goes on and on....
Also, the way eBay's "Best Match" search is set -up, it is designed to favor the larger top sellers on the site, further decreasing sales for the small/ medium sellers. They are "paying" to have their items advertised, but they are being buried or not being seen at all, that's called a loss for all you cheerleaders.
In turn sellers must recovery those hundreds of dollars in listings fees, for items that did NOT sell because they were buried in eBay's "Best Match" search engine. These paid listings have never been seen, therefore they’ve never had a chance of selling. How will sellers recover those hundreds of dollars in listing losses? RAISE THEIR PRICES, naturally, and pass it on the buyer. They have no choice.
This is the domino effect. The more sellers lose, due to “Best Match” the more they have to recover in the form of higher prices. Ultimately the buyer will absorb these higher fees.
eBay has carefully thought out their solution to eliminating the small/medium/ Mom & Pop sellers, without being the "bad guy" so to speak. They’ll just call it non-seller performance and exterminate them. The only survivors on the site will be the diamond powersellers that receive special pricing and favored search results.
@ Lucky Lenny:
You say at the end of your post that eBay stock closed at $12.36 like your proud of it. Is that minuscule figure supposed to good? It’s a joke!
You also say: “Skype should become more profitable and keeps growing tremendously”
Where do you get your information? Skype was one of the biggest blunders in history. And good luck keeping the Skype tugboat afloat with Google’s new FREE Video Chat. Yes, FREE is something everybody wants to hear during bad economic times. That’s a word eBay removed from it’s vocabulary a long time ago. Something tells me eBay should of been a bit more professional with Google, instead of blocking google check-out on the site and alienating them like they did the sellers who made eBay the giant it once was.
Watch the stocks fall simultaneously with the changes: www.youtube.com/watch?...
You speak of eBays turnaround when the ecomony rebounds!!!!! Taht is when it will plummet. No one will need it anymore.
Read the Wake-Up! post, a couple above yours, for starters.
In truth, a vast majority of people are finding out they can purchase items for less, with less hassle, at other venues.
Google searches for products are replacing the heavily manipulated eBay search engines.
Business 101: Competition lowers prices.
eBay's new policy? Eliminate much of the on-site competition between sellers.
Dinah is right and its something we've been saying ALL THIS YEAR - ebay is headed down the toilet. No...you won't see it suddenly but you will see it gradually the way we've been seeing it this year. Get real folks - face reality! Donahoe and his crew needs to go before its too late. As for the economy....all I can say is my website is doing well because there, customer is truly king and they don't even have to leave feedback or stars :-)
"With more people searching for a bargain, customer spend at eBay may stay at deflated levels until the economy turns"
Huh? I thought eBay was the bargain hunters dream.
Could it just be that the sellers offering the best bargains are no longer on eBay?
Pick an item, such as a cd, dvd, book, electronic gadget, etc, and do a search on eBay.
9 times out of 10 eBay will direct you to the seller Buy.
Buy is Buy.com, they have their own website selling the same items.
They raise the price on eBay for most items to offer free shipping.
Their own site adds shipping. Bottom line: same total cost, it just makes it look like a deal with the so called "free shipping."
eBay wants sellers to lower prices so eBay can be more competitive, lol.
Let's recap here. Donahoe killed eBay's search engine; got rid of FREE keyword advertising for premium stores; added a ton of advertising; took away seller feedback, checks & money orders; added dsrs; made Paypal mandatory; and conducted at least 2 years worth of guinea pig tests all of which drove buyers & sellers off the site.
eBay had no competition until Donahoe created it because eBay used to be the world's biggest online auction site. Now it's a text book example of how to wreck a company - just hire a Baine consultant, lol.
@Shawn Ward who states:
"60m people visiting eBay every month - sellers do not want to give up that base."
60m people visiting eBay every month does NOT translate into conversions. What it means is "window shopping" and price comparisons.
I think your being bias to the number of people visiting eBay each month as well.
Here's eBay's reach as of November 19th according to Alexa.com:

18% ???
The number of unique pages viewed per user per day for this site is down 2% over a 3 month period as well.
The old eBay would have bustling with holiday shoppers in September, regardless of market trends. Not anymore.
I'm afraid eBay has hit a main artery, and in turn, (out of necessity to save money), has given the average buyer the means and the will to shop elsewhere. Please try to remember, a large portion of eBay's sales came from it's sellers, who were also buyers. When they screwed the sellers, they screwed themselves. Greed will always blind you to the obvious.

My opinion of course :)
I would not buy ebay stock as it has not hit the bottom. No where near it. When the 4Q results come out it will be a no brainer. You'd have to be insane to buy it until way into 2009 or maybe even never!
Whether the sellers like it or not, eBay has become a household name. You could take a list of auction sites and test 100 people on the name recognition and eBay would win in a landslide. Bottom line, buyers have to know where to go to buy goods...and right now that place is eBay.
Unless these smaller sites decide to work together to build one legit competitor, you will always have the giant (eBay) and the peasants (all other sites) scrambling around to collect the crumbs that have fallen off the giant's dinner plate.
eBay currently sits at $11.86/share. At these prices, I know I'll be stocking up on eBay stock. Come talk to me in a year or two and I'll let you know what I did with double/triple my money back.
It was $40 a year ago. Seems to be headed the wrong way to me.
But go ahead, buy away. Grab some GM shares while you're at!
Bet you bought Enron too!
Bottom line is, eBay is likely to reach at least $20 a share again, with the potential to be a huge moneymaker if held longer term.
You can't replace name recognition and for the foreseeable future, eBay will be one of the primary internet hubs of commerce. $11.86/share is a steal.
"Whether the sellers like it or not, eBay has become a household name."
Enron was a household name at one point in time too.
@HeadHunter again who stated:

Never underestimate the will of honest Mom & Pop sellers who MADE eBay the household name it is today. Small/medium and Mom & Pop sellers HAVE been scrambling around to collect the crumbs that have fallen off the giant's dinner plate. And guess what? They don't like it!!!
eBay was an infant in the marketplace at one point too. So look out eBay and it's cheerleaders! Hell hath no fury like an eBay seller deceived used, abused and scorned!

I know that I am not alone as I am finding shopping fun again. Independent Mom and Pop sellers have a personal vested interest in providing good service and keeping their customers happy. Business seems to flourishe under those condition rather than stagnate as it does under the whip of a greedy corporation.
Ebays dismal sales are only of their own making and have nothing to do with the economy - just look at the double digit growth of the eBay alternatives in this very same economy
I have decided to move most of my sales to Bonanzle from eBay.
I had a couple of questions, and sent them to their site contact.
Two (2) hours later I had the answers by a real live friendly Rep.
Send a question to eBay and it can take days, if they even reply with one of their standard, one size fits all answers.
If anyone thinks that the likes of Amazon or Google is not keeping tabs on the looming downfall of eBay, better think again.
Bonanzle.com is a wonderful place! Full of great people, buyers and sellers. Mark and Bill from Bonanzle.com are two remarkable and exceptional individuals who believe that shopping and selling should be fun and not terrifying. Sellers should embrace their buyers, not fear them. Bonanzle.com is bringing true fun and excitement back to the marketplace again.
I have spoken with them several times via email, and never did I wait more than an hour or so for a response. And you know what the best part is? A real human emailed me back! With helpful answers, a wonderful attitude and a sense of humor to boot. Yes, that's right - it's OK to smile again!
You see, sellers and buyers are symbiotic, without each other, both will fail, and neither will survive. I have never seen a company pit there buyers and sellers against one another. eBay accomplished this feat quite easily and it spells utter disaster for the marketplace (at least eBay's Marketplace).
Sellers dread receiving feedback anymore, as they skip a heartbeat opening the DSR's praying and hoping that this will not be the day they go out of business. eBay is NOT fun. It's down right deadly if you ask me. Too much stress never increased a persons lifespan. But hey, we're replaceable, right?
I have a great feeling about Bonanzle.com. Imagine... Having fun shopping and fun selling again! What a much needed breath of fresh air!
Plus tax = $8.73
Cost of listing on eBay = $.15
Final value fees = $3.80
Paypal fees (including flat $.35 fee) = $1.79
Total cost of CD to seller: $14.47
Item sold for $19.99
Total profit of: $5.52
Unless you can come across tons of rare CD's each day, $5 is barely worth your time and effort.
If you're selling something that has minimal demand, best donate to charity and get the tax write-off rather than p*ss your money away on feEpay.
Not to mention everything the other posters mentioned was spot-on regarding the ridiculous changes in the past 2 years.
If someone would make an online auction site like feEpay 2 YEARS AGO, they'd make a killing... kinda like feEpay was doing.
First, eBay artificially increased the number with Buy.com's and other "diamond sellers" listings (Buy alone has over 500,000). Those new diamond sellers don't pay listing fees so there's a hit to revenue. Then in September they instituted the new Fixed Price 30 format, which brought millions of pre-existing Store listings into eBay Core. Medved only counts Core listings. The FP30 listings do bring more revenue than the old store ones 35 cents/mo as opposed to 5 or 10) but the total fee varies. For electronics and computers it's cheaper than in Store, so those listings have moved en masse and their fee burden is somewhat lower. The complaining you hear is from the rest of the sellers, whose fees have gone up.
In sum, those higher listing numbers do NOT represent a higher revenue stream for eBay, and are easily manipulated and touted to ignorant analysts (but I repeat myself). Don't be fooled.
EBay today’s customers (or at least the majority) are the worst!
Selling on EBay with these type of customers or should I say: scammers, IDIOTS and low live extortionists, combined with idiotic policies whether EBay’s or PayPal’s has become every sellers nightmare.
Sellers are leaving in droves and I am one of them! X-Powerseller!
Thank God for my own websites, Google search and Amazon. We are done with FeeBay & PreyPal!
It’s now time relax, sit back and watch EBay’s fall from grace! It is fun!
I thought you were gone for good, but I'm glad you are back.
Your name calling drivel helps fuel the fire.

My actual email from Bonanzle in reply to my question about being away on vacation, etc :
"Hi Bob,
Welcome to Bonanzle! Glad to have such a seasoned business person at Bonanzle, a great addition to our community.
We do have a feature which allows you to put your items on "reserve" when you are out. You can find this option in your batch editor. You can also leave the items for sale in your booth and just post a message saying that you would ship when you got back, etc.
Buying at Bonanzle is about to become much easier. We are in the process of expanding our categories and also adding more features to enhance the buying experience. You can keep up with the progress by visiting the Bonanzle Blogs
Take care and let us know if you have any questions.

If ProBuyer was anything more than an eBay plant, he/she would be willing to shop around for the best deals.
Just supporting eBay does not make one a buying Pro, more like a buying neophyte.
Who are you now Sybil? How many fingers do I have up? (or should I say finger?) Come on, now snap out of it (*slap*).
@LA101 who states:
"Skype has FREE video chat supported for years now - millions of people have been using it - looks like you are not one of them"
Why the hell would anyone want to use Skype? Of course I don't use it.
@LA101 again, who states:
"...actually, if you were, (using Skype) you'd never switch to any google rubbish".
eBay stocks: -----$11.69
Google stocks: $ 280.18
Yea, it sure does look like Google has their head in the sand, aye? lol!
People, shallow people, like yourself fail to see the truth. I'm sorry you have invested your life savings into eBay Charmin, I mean stocks, but however you look at it, eBay has been spiraling downward regardless of market trends. I'm not sure but when you finally toss your Charmin in the toilet, there maybe a FVF (Final Flushing Fee).
@proBuyer who states:
"...Bonanzle" customer support called you back? That's because you are one of 7 customers they have!
First that is simply not true. Bonanzle.com is growing faster than eBay was in the beginning.
You remember when eBay had 7 members or less don't you? That was when they began lying to us, yea, way back then they began deceiving people! The story that eBay was founded to help Omidyar's fiancée trade PEZ Candy dispensers was fabricated by a public relations manager in 1997 to interest the media.!!! LMAO!! Can you trust a company that started lying from day one?
@proBuyer again who states:
"....they think they can bring down $9 bln business by posting on these blogs..."
That's where you wrong. We have supported eBay for years. We don't want to see it disappear (which it is). We want them to exercise the greed demons from their selfish corporate souls and get back to their roots that made them the powerhouse they once were.
Did you know that at one time eBay actually appreciated it's sellers? They actually sent their customers little gifts in the mail for good performance. What they sent their customers was nothing super special (sorry, no Aston Martins), but it was the praise, recognition and appreciation for jobs well done. You were really appreciated! And it was these thoughtful acts that made eBay - eBay, and a real community.
Now they want you dead or gone as quickly as possible to make room for over-seas garbage that has never set any website apart from another. eBay was unique, now they're just part of the crowd.
Just my opinion, of course :)
And the truth shall set you free!
Ebay has gone buyer centric, to heck with the "Clutter sellers".
Ebays attitude is to become more of a fixed price market place for new items, less of a collectibles and antiques swapmeet.
Look at recent changes to feedback. I have lots more NPB's than I ever had. Can't leave anything but positive feedback as a seller, yet we still have the useless option to block bidders who have negative feedback.
Ebay cancels Ebay live because it has turned into a gripefest. Right..that's the way to run a community..turn off the complaints and everything will be peachy.
Apparently they refuse to hear anything from sellers but positives just like their feedback.
And why not listen to the griping? It used to be what ebay called valuable customer feedback. You know, like clarity.
Also with PAYPAL after receiving 6 credit card payments , most people dont realise they are then forced to go onto the Business style Paypal without a choice - you are automatically transfered over and given no choice , another violation of indiviual rights - the same as being forced to have Paypal on your payment choices. Its no wonder that
Ebay shares are heading for $10 and lower - anyone with any brains would bet out as they could end up like citi bank or worse at Zero. Also people wonder why Ebay sellers are so aggressive , the share price is an example of money doing the talking !!! $40 to $10 need I say more .

The quote was from the poster just above my post, HeadHunter15.
I wouldn't buy eBay stock at one dollar per share!
"...Can't leave anything but positive feedback as a seller, yet we still have the useless option to block bidders who have negative feedback...."
What an excellent observation! That truly is a crock. You can't block any buyer so long as they have nothing but fake positive feedback. Well done Moriazbane!
In addition, I for have always been a believer in shipping only to "confirmed addresses". PayPal and eBay promote this safer practice as well.
However, the seller has no way to block "unconfirmed addresses" from making purchases. You cannot set this up in your preferences at PayPal to block these potential threats.
Seems like eBay wants that Final Value Fee no matter how they get, even if it's at your expense or the cost of your business.
Hypocritical if you ask me.
I just bought some Hannah Montana shirts at Walmart for ONE DOLLAR!!! Special blow out price!
They'll probably show up on ebay for $5.00... or up! Definitely up, or the poor seller won't even break even!
ebay is a has been.
I've got $10 set aside to buy eBay stock when it becomes a penny stock - which I suspect will be shortly after 4QTR results come in, lol.
Please forgive me for not getting back to you sooner. I've been a nervous wreck trying to find you a better deal on Bonanzle.com NOT!
I hope your arm isn't sore from patting your own back.
I've been busy preparing my booth on Bonanzle.com
I will let you know when it is ready to open, you are more than welcome to shop there.
I've also been busy shamelessly promoting Bonanzle.com around the web.
Thought this thread was dead, the action is now here:
blog.auctionbytes.com/...
It seems that page views on eBafia are down 32% for Oct.
With a bit of time on my hands this morning I spent a few seconds to find you a great buy on electronics at Bonanzle.com :
An Antique Early Velvetskin Connecticut Vibrating Massager.
Hope you like purple. Couldn't find one on eBay though for a price comparison.
BTW get that old number of 310K items on Bonanzle.com out of your head, that was a day or so ago, it is now nearly 360K.
And the answer is no, I haven't put 50K items on there.
Helping to build Bonanzle.com actually brings back some of those good feelings that I had when I was helping to build eBay, years ago.
And one more thing ProBuyer, even though, on another blog, you called me a "half-witted, confused and bitter person" I would like to wish you, and any other readers/posters here, a Happy Thanksgiving.
Hopefully this link will load correctly.
Sorry I’m late proBuyer, but I too was taking advantage of some great pre-black Friday deals at WalMart. WOW! The prices at WalMart make eBay’s prices look like something on Rodeo Drive! I can’t wait to see how high the prices increase when Uncle Sam get’s their foot in the door in as early as 2009.
Did you know WalMart has really beefed up the electronics department? Samsung, Dell, Sony, Panasonic and more! - and I didn’t have to pay those outrageous shipping prices had I bought on eBay, or wait 90 days for a coupon to be redeemed.
If I have a problem with my purchase, I simply go back within 30 days and exchange it or get a full refund (NO delivery or return shipping charges and I don’t have to wait 6 weeks to receive my replacement). You know.... It’s all about selection and prices, selection and prices, selection and prices.... : ) Can’t forget about CONVENIENCE.
Now, on to more pressing matters....
Are you sure your not an ox in disguise? You know the saying about the ox, right? I find it funny that LA101 and proBuyer seem to always be back to back with their comments. I wonder if they could be one in the same?
From what you state in your last post, you’re basically just a buyer. You really don’t have any right on this side of the fence.
Your not one of “those” buyers who get their stuff for free by threatening sellers with negative feedback if they don’t bow to your demands, are you? You know..... file an “item not as described” complaint: Get your money back AND keep the product AND still leave a Neg? Are you afraid that our comments may make a change on eBay and you may actually have to pay for the items you buy?
It's not all about the prices on Bonanzle, stockholder (we all know they're lower than eBay's), it's also about a stress-free environment and bringing fun and excitement back to the marketplace. Selling shouldn’t have to shorten your lifespan - not to forget that Best Match is keeping 20 million listings on the shelf collecting dust anyway while they show favoritism to the diamond sellers. Imagine..... paying a listing fee just to have BUY dot com’s items show up instead of mine???
eBay has got everyone so uptight there is no joy in anything anymore. Like I said, when feedback comes in (if it comes in) sellers run to their DRSs and see if they’ve been scammed or their competition has negged them and successfully eliminated their rival. That IS NOT a healthy environment. People with attitudes like yours are willing to kill off what ever doesn't make them money and lots of it in a short amount of time. You just can’t be happy with a steady flow of millions per day. You want “IT” all.
Nobody has time to play your game of price comparisons simply because it’s quite obvious that the 310K listings on Bonanzle.com are unique and different and spark interest in potential buyers, as oppose to the same old over-seas garbage offered on eBay these days. Imagine..... shopping for the same old old crap every day...... Have fun browsing proBuyer!
Oh, almost forgot.... Did you see eBay’s stock prices? They hit a new low Friday.... Down to $10.91. Have a great day!
And a very Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! (even the ones who will be dining on Macaroni & Cheese because eBay has put them out of business)
@ Wake-Up!
LOL
It is very odd that ProBuyer & LA101 post minutes apart.
BTW: LA101 was posting under Lusy, but changed his/her/their ID.
Seriously, we should keep all of those less fortunate in our thoughts this Holliday season, and help when possible.
Don't forget today is Boy Scouts can good collection day!
Ours has already been picked up, so better hurry!
@proBuyer who states:
"...BTW, how come you betrayed this wonderful site and went shopping to wallmart?..."
I'm sorry proBuyer, but you truly are ignorant to the fundamentals of retail business. First of all, it's Walmart, not wallmart (at least we know your honest about being an eBay shopper) lol! :))
Retail sales 101: (for proBuyer)
When a department store has a " Black Friday Sale" or almost any sale, 9 times out of 10 a specific item will be sold at a ridiculously low price and they will lose money or break even on it. Why? The plan is to get the buyer of that item to buy additional merchandise while they're there. Hopefully retail priced items.
Let me put it into "vegetable" terms for you so you'll be able to follow:
At the local grocery store have you ever noticed that when salad produce such as lettuce, tomatoes, celery etc is on sale, salad dressing is not?
Or when hot dog buns are on sale, the hot dogs themselves are not?
Have you ever wondered why the milk and bread is at the furthest corner of the supermarket?
I'll let you ponder the thought for a while proBuyer, but don't wait too long, eBay's stock may slip into the single digits by the time you figure the fundamentals of shopping.
Oh, and by the way..... who said we didn't shop both Bonanzle and WalMart ?
@proBuyer again who states:
"....I asked you a SIMPLE question - can you provide an active item on bonanzle which I couldn't fine a better deal on eBay...."
Yes, I can and so can anybody else when they visit the Bonanzle.com website. However, if we did waste our time proving that Bonanzle.com is priced lower than eBay, you'd simply have one of your cronies hurry and lower their eBay price so you can give the impression of victory.
Happy shopping Probuyer and I hope you don't run into any sellers like the one who swindled thousands of eBay bidders and other Internet users out of $5 million.
What? You didn't hear about it? Oh.... well, here's the link:

"professional eBay buyer" You have to admit, that's pretty funny when you think about it!
as of 6:10 Am, Nov., 23.
PB states:
"And as a buyer I don't want to waste my time searching 314K of the items there (especially if - God forbids - it has sellers like bob)"
I'm still selling on eBay too ; ) and still have 100% all positive feedback, with all DSR ratings of 4.8 or above, and all above average ratings on my seller dashboard..
Why keep selling on eBay too? I'd be crazy to limit myself to one venue, just as I would be crazy to limit my shopping to one venue.
Does it bother me that you keep blasting Bonanzle?
Not in the slightest. Feel free to troll the web touting eBay, and posting "propaganda" about Bonanzle.
If Bonanzle ever becomes the type of venue that eBay has become for it's sellers, then look for me to be posting bad remarks about it too.
BTW it's low lifes, not "low-lives" and the actual all all pos FB's are over 1300.
Between now and the next eBay blog, I'll be trying to think of a safe way to get together with any one of your personalities and offer a $10,000 wager that my feedbacks are as stated.
There's your challenge proBuyer, or LA101
everyone is watching........
Well, this thread is a little tired, I agree.
We have presented and proven our case. Complete victory has been won by presenting unbiased facts once again. As Et tu, Brute! states: The Truth Shall Set You Free!

eBay introduced “hidden bidders” supposedly for the prevention of fraudulent SCOs (ha, ha, ha), but clearly the effect has been to obscure even otherwise blatantly obvious shill bidding to the point that buyers can not detect it, can not therefore report it, and eBay does not have to waste any of their valuable resources pretending to do anything about it. Quite reprehensible!

With ebay's new improvements, my search brings up 16 items!!! SIXTEEN. That's a 2 digit number. 4 years ago it was a 5 digit number!!!!!!! Ebay (and all those of you supporting them) surely you know the difference between a 2 digit number and a 5 digit number. Don't you????
I own a successful plumbing company. 5 years ago I almost sold the whole business to go full time as an ebay seller. I sensed waaaay back then an enormous greed on ebay's part that would eventually be like the dog with the bone staring into the stream at a bigger dog with a bigger bone. Boy did I call THAT one!!!
I stopped selling when they changed the feedback, but I had slowed before then. Ebay has taken all the fun away. I was both buyer and seller. I buy a certain diecast. There are very few of us collectors for these. We all emailed each other, and chatted, and shared info. We created websites for these little cars. We shared our resources to create a library of info about the history. Now we dont even know who we are. Ebay has hid our identities. I keep up with a few of my buddies by keeping records on my PC of how much feedback they have. I can't contact them through the auctions anymore, and as a result the fun of collecting has died. And since ebay has lost 90% of it's buyers of collectibles I now can't sell my collection if I wanted to. I had planned this collection (the second largest in the world) to be my retirement. Now I'm HOPING there will be something similar to the OLD ebay around when I retire, otherwise I'm going to die broke with a huge collection.
SOMEONE needs to open a giant site like the OLD ebay that has NO NEW VENDORS!!! We don't want mega retail. We dont want Amazon!!! Some of us want to buy and sell old stuff, collectibles, used items (some of the used items are better quality!) and we are looking for BARGAINS!!! Not new laptops, fashion handbags, and culled electronics from massive, non-responsive, power sellers who wont take the time to take good pictures, dont take time to describe the items, and simply do not care.
5 years ago an auction might have 8 pictures of the item. They would be HIGH RESOLUTION pictures in the auction body that were hosted by small fee websites like photobucket (back then we paid for them). The description MIGHT be as long (or longer) than my comment here. The seller would actually DESCRIBE the item!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
(Did you read that last sentence?????) they actually took their precious time to DESCRIBE the item. It wasn't a stock photo, and it wasn't a copy/paste generic description from the companies website. 5 years ago a USED ITEM would have pictures of the actual item. Now ALL the items are stock photos!!! New AND used. And they wonder why buyers are leaving? (duh)
5 years ago sellers were friendly, and they enjoyed listing. Now it's a chore to even list a one sentence description, because they hate ebay.
Just visit the seller central on ebay's site. You'll see what I mean.
When I sold on ebay I once did a test. I listed a vintage GI Joe. I took many high resolution pictures (and posed him). I did a full description (bits and pieces found off websites, altered and comprised into a short one page history), and I answered EVERY question in full. I also listed this EXACT SAME GI Joe at the EXACT HOUR as a large well known powerseller who used a small crappy photo, and a one word description. They ended within a few minutes of each other. Shipping was MORE on mine, and mine still brought about EIGHT TIMES MORE than his did! The buyers spoke. They want personalization. They want real auctions by people who WANT to sell it and have time to list it correctly. Bonanzle is the same lame powersellers, just at a different address.
