Christmas Day brought good tidings for both Apple's (AAPL) iOS and Google's (GOOG) Android platforms. According to Flurry Analytics, a record 17.4 million devices were activated on Christmas day. This is up from last year's record 6.8 million activations. And while smartphone activations typically outpace that of tablets by a ratio of 4:1 on Christmas Day 2012, more tablets were actually activated than smartphones. The big winners were Apple iPads, Apple iPad Minis and Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7" tablets. Amazon (AMZN) had a very strong performance in the tablet category, rising by several thousand percent over its baseline of tablet activations over the earlier part of December.
The number of app downloads this Christmas Day hit 328 million compared to 242 million app downloads for Christmas Day last year, according to Flurry, which claims to detect 90% of all daily iOS and Android activations and track more than 260,000 apps. Flurry expects the accelerated app downloads to continue throughout this week, which could result in a whopping 2 billion app downloads for this year, another new annual record.
Meanwhile, Amazon was just ranked with the highest holiday period online retailer customer satisfaction for the eighth year running according to customer experience analytics company, ForeSee. The 2012 Index-based on more than 25,000 customer surveys collected during the prime holiday shopping season between Thanksgiving and Christmas- measured satisfaction with 100 top retailers. Amazon scored 88 on a 100-point scale -- the same number it scored last year.
ForeSee says this is due to the quality, variety and size of Amazon's inventory and the fact that it provides an end-to-end shopping experience on the web, mobile, tablet and offline. In stores, customers can scan the barcodes of products and then search for a better price on Amazon. "At this point, Amazon has been dominant for so long and has such a history of focusing on the customer, its hard to imagine anyone else coming close," noted Larry Freed, ForeSee president and CEO in a statement. "Companies should emulate Amazon's focus on the customer, which is clearly linked to superior revenues over the years."
Amazon announced that this year's holiday period was its biggest holiday season ever, with over 26.5 million items ordered worldwide on its peak day. The company said its tablet was the most popular item for customers. The Kindle Fire HD remained the best-selling product. It added that during the holidays, apps and game sales were up 250% year over year.
All of this of course augurs well for Apple, Amazon and Google and any number of app developers. Given declines in PPS for these three companies over the past few days, I would consider them all good values at their current prices.
