Investors occasionally use a stock trading technique called 'Buying Dividends,' which is the technique of buying stocks before the ex dividend date and selling the stock shortly after the ex date at about the same price, yet still being entitled to the dividend. This technique generally works only in bull markets.

If you are interested in buying dividends, there are many stocks in many different industries to choose from. In order to be entitled to the dividend, you have to buy the stock before the ex-dividend date, and you can't sell the stock until after the ex date. The actual dividend may not be paid for another few weeks.

Of course, the companies can also reduce their dividend without warning. Also, please check your info again as many of the dividends have changed. For example, BAC is paying 1.28 for an 8.5% annual yield, not 22.76%.

Surely, you mean traders or speculators here and not investors. While, it might appeal to some to chase the 1-2% return (on average) that is implied in this trade, there is not a single example out there of building wealth by following these type of arbitrages.

Sure, the extra 1-2% is gravy if someone has a primary long term strategy and is in cash right now and looking for the next big opportunity (Buffet's loaded gun, elephant hunting analogy). If this is the long term strategy, then good luck!!

Cautionary note here...In theory, someone could do this every quarter and accumulate their way to millions. In reality, the market is really efficient about these sort of arbitrages and as soon as enough people start doing it, the excess return goes away.

What an AWESOME article....quick question for options experts.....
Can't you just throw a zero cost collar on some of these names?
Does that violate any dividend policies?

I wrote an article on the dividend capture strategy:

    www.dividendgrowthinve...

Basically this strategy assumes that markets are inefficient and that there is free lunch. Even the author of the article doesn't do what he preaches - then why should you risk a large capital loss for a small dividend?

Humm, in my years of trading I have observed one thing. The day after the stock goes ex-dividend, it drops by at least the dividend amount and that's in a slow market. Best case you are in the stock a few days waiting for it to recover. In a market that moves over 5% per day up AND down, why take the risk for a few percent. You might as well just day trade, or buy and hold the divvy stock for a few years and do a DRiP on it.

This strategy is dangerous in these markets. You may have to wait a long time to recoup the ex div drop. And if you choose the right ones that don't drop after ex date, why sell them?
