How can enterprise customers receive hundreds of servers with a fraction of the packaging? This is the obstacle that faced Oliver Campbell, Dell Inc.’s (DELL) senior manager of global packaging.
The answer struck Campbell as he was gulping down frosty beers with clients and colleagues. Why not package servers like beer bottles? The simple shift to packaging multiple servers within one box can save the company millions of dollars over the long term. In addition, large customers no longer have as difficult a time with disposing of mounds of packaging.
Campbell also revealed in a recent BusinessWeek interview (link) that he frequently monitors blog buzz relating to packaging. From bloggers he realized that all too often small items such as memory sticks are shipped in overly large packages. This too was promptly corrected.
In the current recession, it is refreshing to see that Dell continues to innovate rather than solely focusing on its balance sheet this quarter.
