About this author:

Since I’ve been going through through the Forbes Best Small Companies, a brief look at the Best Big Companies is deserved. The list is comprised of 400 companies and Forbes sorts the list according to a 5 year total return.

Given that many large caps are still mispriced, but not all cheap, these candidates could be worthwhile long term buy and hold additions on declines.

Do you think it means more when insiders sell or buy?

Its always been said that seeing insider buying is a much bigger signal. Selling could be for so many reasons but buying is for one reason only - its cheap.

“Given that many large caps are still mispriced, but not all cheap, these candidates could be worthwhile long term buy and hold additions on declines.”

Your one sentence packs in lots of important concepts.
Without clarification, this is merely interesting but not too enlightening.

What do you mean by ‘mispriced’?
What do you mean by ‘cheap’?
What do you mean by ‘worthwhile long term’?
What do you mean by ‘worthwhile long hold’?
What do you mean by ‘declines’?

I didn't feel that those terms had to be explained in detail and even with further explanations, it would require another round of explanations etc.

"What do you mean by ‘mispriced’?"
market has priced the company incorrectly.

"What do you mean by ‘cheap’?"
doesnt trade with the required margin of safety.

"What do you mean by ‘worthwhile long term’?"
potential long term where you outperform the market

"What do you mean by ‘worthwhile long hold’?"
worthy of holding for > 5 or 10 years

"What do you mean by ‘declines’?"
decline in price to your buy target ranges.

This isn't the type of market where a "buy and hold" strategy necessary pays off, but it can be if you combine building a core position with a trading strategy. I have build a core position with BUCY at about 13 dollars a share, but have been trading it between 12.50 and 13.50, bring my actually cost basis down to around 8.50 a share.

There are a lot of great companies out there that appear cheap. I used to think that MOS was a steal at 60 dollars. Perceptions change along with the prices.

As long as the market continues to act this way, I think the only way to make money is to buy stocks that you don't mind owning over the long run ---- provided they pay a dividend ---- and trade around the core positions.
