Google (GOOG), Yahoo (YHOO) and MSN (MSFT) sites had the highest numbers of unique visitors in December 2008, while AOL Media Network (TWX), Yahoo and MSN Windows Live had the most time per person spent at a site, according to monthly data released by Nielsen Online, which also revealed that the average internet user viewed 2,400 pages during the month.

Top web brand Google logged 126.2 million unique visitors for the month and had an average of 1 hour and 25 minutes of time spent, while the average amount of time per person spent on AOL was 3 hours and 41 minutes.

Average US Per-Person Internet Usage

Nielsen also repored that the average US internet user had an average of 59 sessions/visits, visited 108 domains and viewed nearly 2,400 pages in December 2008.

Data also show that visitors spent an average of 55 seconds on a typical web page and logged 68 hours monthly PC time per person.

Top 10 Parent Companies/Divisions

Google, Microsoft and Yahoo ranked as the top three parent companies/divisions for December 2008 based on US usage from home and work:

At #1, Google logged 133 million unique visitors from home and work who each visited at least one Google-owned site or launched a Google-based appllication during the month.

But while Google had the largest number of unique visitors, AOL - which ranked fourth in terms of unique visitors - had the highest average time per user, more than 3 hours, 41 minutes, Nielsen reported. Users also logged more average time for user on FaceBook than on Google.

    This is an impressive ranking for Apple (No. 10) since they are not primarily focused on the Web or Entertainment. Quite a potential.

    These numbers kinda mitigate the "strength" of the Google brand. With far superior time exposure on a per capita basis, MSN/Microsoft and Yahoo just have to figure out a better way to monetize that exposure. Of course this is FAR easier said than done. it would seem to make a YHOO and MSN colaboration pretty feasible (maybe).
