Shark Tale DVD sales surpasses opening week box office receipts. Why does this matter?

Dreamworks Animation SKG (DWA) announced that its animated film, Shark Tale, sold 6 million units, grossing $80 million in its opening week.

Quick comment:  The press release also pointed out that the first week of DVD sales surpassed the $56M that Shark Tale grossed in its opening week at the box office.  This point underscores a fundamental shift that is occurring in the movie industry.  Consumer dollars continue to move away from theaters and towards home entertainment.
