Netflix (NFLX) CFO Barry McCarthy told investors at a conference in New York Wednesday that the company is planning to offer a stand-alone version of its online video streaming service, Reuters reports. So far, Netflix has offered online streaming at no cost to subscribers to its DVD by mail service.

The company currently offers about 12,000 titles on a streaming basis, with about 100,000 titles to choose from on disk.

Netflix offers streaming direct over the Web, via a dedicated set-top box from Roku, through the Microsoft Xbox Live service and through some Blu-Ray players.

McCarthy did not give any details on timing or pricing of a streaning-only service.

NFLX Thursday was off 61 cents, or 1.7%, to $35.18.

If you have a new laptop, it should have a cable connector that will let you stream your Netflix WatchNow films through our laptop to your TV. That way, you don't have to buy another set-top box. Most people don't realize that they can connect this way.
