Give Bernie a Break

The system is really being unfair to poor Bernie Madoff… After all, he was making people money until the facts caught up with him and his house of cards collapsed. So? His strategy, even if it wasn’t what he told investors he was doing, worked for a while. Those who pulled money out in the good old days made a profit, only those who waited too long were left holding the empty bag. How is that different from other giants of investment finance, such as Sandy Weill and Chuck Prince? Investors who rode Citigroup shares higher and sold near the top made a killing. The ones that got burned were the ones who kept dancing with Chuck after the music stopped. The same thing happened to the ones who danced too long with old Bernie. I’ve always been in favor of switching partners often…

So give Bernie a break. What he really needs is a golden parachute to help him deal with all this stress…

I haven’t had so much fun since the Rolling Stones sang about me… Well, to be honest, there have been a few other good times since then, too.

…have some courtesy, have some sympathy, and some taste…

You may have a point. Most of the "titans of Wall Street" are lying, cheating scumbags. Bernie was only marginally worse than Angelo Mozillo and the owners of Golden Worst.

The obvious difference here is intent. Madoff intended to defraud his clients whereas Weill and Prince "merely" made poor investment decisions on behalf of them.

There is some difference between lawful robbery and unlawful one. In case of Madoff, he lied to his investors about investment decisions. In case of Chuck Prince, he only lied about perspectives of the company, and maybe he didn't even lie, may be he believed in this CDO crap himself.

There is a huge lesson from Madoff case: never, ever keep all you eggs in one basket, no matter how sure you are in this basket.

Madoff, Skilling and Stanford get to pay for their crimes in prison. Rest assured, there are far more who will never be caught and will never pay.

I owned Citigroup shares and lost so so much money. Not only should Bernie and family go to jail but so should Prince, Mozillo etc. Of course they knew and their actions were deceitful and illegal. How could all these foolish comments be made.. Not only did they know they have no morals, etc. Ruth Madoff, Chuck Prince etc should offer to give everything they own and become poor like the rest of us to cleanse their souls.
SHAME ON THEM and the rot at the top that is definitely involved. All the politicians etc involved (and there are very very many) should be thrown in jail. What has happened to the USA? IT;s a tragedy and a disgrace. Shame on them

Let's put up a big bronze statue of him on Wall St. as he's really one of them. And, that way the pigeons can crap on him like he crapped on his pigeons.

Bernie got the idea for his scheme by watching the government's handling of social security. Bernie would have pulled it off if only he could print money!
