We knew it’d be a hit, but not that much of a hit. The official Skype iPhone application, announced earlier this week, hit the iTunes Store last Tuesday and since then it’s seen an astonishing one million downloads to the popular Apple (AAPL) devices, which is nothing short of amazing. That translates to approximately 6 downloads per second.

In the blog post announcing the milestone, Skype blogger Peter Parkes says he’s “confident that it’s one of the fastest-downloaded iPhone apps ever”, which means he’s not really sure.

And since we don’t know either, we’re reaching out to you, dear readers. Does Skype now hold the record for reaching the million download mark fastest for a free app, or not?

Skype on the iPhone is great! Whenever you have wi-fi the iphone becomes a wi-fi phone. Having this will significantly reduce the number of AT&T cell minutes I use each month. The iPhone is so much more than a cell phone.

iPhone Skype App is pretty good. It means that you can get rid of Fring which is really trying and also tries to hock a paid version. The interesting thing is that sitting in your house (with your WIFI) you wonder why you don't use Skype more for normal calls.

The most likely consequences I see is 1) normal phone companies (fixed and mobile) will lose minutes as users get used to Skype, 2) video calling is what the consumer will expect as they have this already with computer based Skype.

Don't forget... a while back Apple quietly got a patent to make the screen a camera, by putting ccd elements between the pixel elements.

Not only does this mean the coolest video calling experience since the debute in 2001 A Space Odyssey; but, also you'll be looking directly at the recipient, not up into a webcam. The ultimate user experience and very personal.

    iPhone all the way.
