Seeking Alpha
About this author:

The Seeking Alpha community mourns the tragic and premature death of longtime SA contributor Greg Newton. Dave Fry sadly reports that Greg suffered a fatal heart attack Thursday while driving to meet his fiancee in Florida.

On his blog, Naked Shorts, and on the pages of SA, Greg's witty and biting critique of hedge fund industry hubris proved altogether prescient over the course of the past year.

Our thoughts are with Greg's loved ones at this time.

May he rest in peace.

It was shocking and saddening to hear this news today. The rainy skies in the DC area are fitting. His insights and podcasts with Dave Fry were a regular part of my days. He will be missed.

I loved your writing, Greg! Your articles were insightful and helpful to many thousands of people, and they sparkled with wit. If making other peoples' time on Earth just a bit more enjoyable is the mark of a good life - and I think it is - then you've done well.

    Thank you, and Godspeed,

    -Greg.

You don't know these people personally but because of almost daily contact through SA you begin to build a relationship. You don't realize the extent of the relationship until that author tragically passes on.

I am saddened by this news. Greg's wit and insight will be missed. His musings frequently railed against parts of the hedge fund world that he found to be quite naked and devoid of due diligence, well before the Madoff fiasco gained public notoriety.

My condolences to his family and friends. A life well-lived! Rest in peace.

This is sad news. Greg was a good guy and a good journalist. He was a no-nonsense New Zealander who took delight in exposing hypocrisy at any level. He represented the best of financial journalism but unfortunately he seems a rare breed today. If our financial newspapers and news networks were full of Greg Newtons we would be in less of a mess. We are all poorer for his loss.

Saddened to learn of Greg's death -- he will certainly be missed. It was a pleasure to read his pieces over the past few years. Equally pleasing was sharing his blog, Naked Shorts, with others; and in some cases, trying to explain both what it meant to be short, and a naked short! My condolences to his family and fiancee.

I am devastated by Greg's demise. He wrote to me just last Tuesday and mentioned that he will be back blogging on Monday. See his email below. I have been in close contact with Greg for the past few years. His insights and knowledge were without parallel in this industry. My sincere condolences to his family and kin.

Greg and I corresponded a few times. He had a wealth of knowledge and contacts, and the courage to use it. We lost a leader here.

What a shock and a tragedy. Greg was a fantastic person and a great journalist. As a friend of his I think he would have found great irony in the fact that he died on April Fools Day. Wow. Still in shock.

Does anyone know about memorial services or a charitable fund being organized?

I've had a few emails with Greg and he was by far my favorite financial commentator (although he never wrote enough for my greed). If he wrote something, I read it before anything else.
He could cut to the heart of a matter in a few lines in a way other financial journalists, few that they are, couldn't do in a full page feature.
It is really sad that, unlike Tanta @ CR, there is no organised online memorial or recognition of his passing, except for these few crumbs.

Thank you Seeking Alpha for sharing this unfortunate news with the community. Like many of the others who have commented, Greg was my cyberfriend too. I loved his wit, and we had some great correspondences over the past two years. No one had a b.s. detector as strong as Greg's - we will all miss him

Greg Newton's family asked us to post the following:

"Thank you all for your wonderful (mostly) thoughts about Greg. You have all helped in the grieving process by letting us know how he had touched so many people. We are in the process of having Greg returned to NZ. Thank you so much, from his family in NZ."

On Fourth of July weekend Greg used to come to my house in CT. I couldn’t leave the house for the fireworks because of the explosive noise and a very skittish dog. Greg, instead of being in the middle of the party would stay back at the house, put my dog in his lap facing him and while the bursting in air was going on all around, Greg would recite dirty limericks and sing NZ rugby songs to my dog. It seemed to help – but then again, his special brand of humor always did. I am late to this news and very sad.

There once was a fellow named Greg.
Who ousted the Wall Street dreg.
Never for a loss our dear poet
With cheek he did wrote it ’
And now who will take the dreg down a peg.

    RIP friend.
