Normally, the supermarket segment is among the quietest segments of the market. However, in the past decade, the industry has been rocked by competition on the low end from companies like Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) and Dollar General (NYSE:DG) while getting squeezed on the high end from Whole Foods (NASDAQ:WFM).
The result of all this competition has been an industry under pressure, and the industry has responded with a wave of bankruptcies and acquisitions. In just the past year, Supervalu (NYSE:SVU) sold most of its banners to a Cerebrus group and southern chain Winn Dixie sold itself to another competitor, while A&P has entered and exited bankruptcies.
