China Medical Technologies (NASDAQ: CMED) was granted SFDA approval for a bladder cancer FISH probe, an advanced molecular diagnostic test kit that uses DNA probes for early detection and monitoring of bladder cancer.
The probe detects whether human bladder cells show aneuploidy (an unusual number of chromosomes) for chromosomes 3, 7, 17 and loss of the p16 locus. Several China hospitals use the probes for diagnosing patients with hematuria (red blood cells in the urine) and have diagnosed patients with early-stage bladder cancer as well as early-stage ureteral cancer, which caused hematuria in these patients.
After launching the FISH diagnostic system in 2007, China Medical has steadily increased the number of tests that the system can perform. Most recently, the company was given approval for a HER2 FISH probe in November of 2008.
Meanwhile, China Medical is continuing to develop its HPV-DNA Biosensor Chip and Surface Plasmon Resonance-based Analysis System (the SPR System), which can detect the virus that causes cervical cancer and sexually transmitted disorders. China Medical paid $345 million to purchase the system from Molecular Diagnostics Technologies Limited in 2008. The company also sells diagnostic products for its original ECLIA system.
