I have searched for profitable companies that pay rich dividends, and that are in short-term uptrend, in mid-term uptrend and in long-term uptrend. Stocks in an uptrend are performing well and are in a buying mode.

I have elaborated a screening method, which shows stock candidates following these lines. Nonetheless, the screening method should only serve as a basis for further research. All the data for this article were taken from Yahoo Finance and finviz.com.

The screen's formula requires all stocks to comply with all following demands:

  1. Dividend yield is greater than 4.4%.
  2. Forward P/E is less than 17.
  3. Stock price is above 20-day simple moving average (short-term uptrend).
  4. Stock price is above 50-day simple moving average (mid-term uptrend).
  5. Stock price is above 200-day simple moving average (long-term uptrend).

After running this screen on April 17, 2013, before the market open, I discovered the following five stocks:

Avista Corp. (NYSE:AVA)

Avista Corporation, an energy company, engages in the generation, transmission and distribution of energy and other energy-related businesses primarily in the United States and Canada.

Avista Corporation has a trailing P/E of 20.64 and a low forward P/E of 14.65. The average annual earnings growth estimates for the next five years is at 4%, and the price-to sales ratio is quite low at 1.05 . The forward annual dividend yield is quite high at 4.48%, and the five-year average dividend yield was at 4.20%. The payout ratio is at 88%. The annual rate of dividend growth over the past five years was very high at 13.11%, and over the past ten years was quite high at 9.77%.

The AVA stock price is 0.89% above its 20-day simple moving average, 3.09% above its 50-day simple moving average and 8.0% above its 200-day simple moving average. That indicates a short-term, mid-term and long-term uptrend.

AVA will report its latest quarterly financial results on April 30. AVA is expected to post a profit of $0.71 a share, a 10% rise from the company's actual earnings for the same quarter a year ago. The reported results will probably affect the stock price in the short term.

The rich dividend, the fact that the company consistently has raised dividend payments and that the future yield is greater than the five-year average yield, and the fact that the stock is in an uptrend are all factors that make AVA stock quite attractive.

Mercury General Corporation (NYSE:MCY)

Mercury General Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, engages in writing personal automobile insurance.

Mercury General has a very low debt (total debt to equity is only 0.08) and it has a trailing P/E of 19 and a forward P/E of 15.57. The average annual earnings growth estimates for the next 5 years is at 6.05%, and the price-to-sales ratio is very low at 0.80. The forward annual dividend yield is very high at 6.05%, and the five-year average dividend yield was at 5.60%. The payout ratio is at 115%. The annual rate of dividend growth over the past five years was at 1.11%, and over the past 10 years was quite high at 6.39%.

The MCY stock price is 5.80% above its 20-day simple moving average, 7.24% above its 50-day simple moving average and 5.65% above its 200-day simple moving average. That indicates a short-term, mid-term and long-term uptrend.

Mercury General will report its latest quarterly financial results on April 29. MCY is expected to post a profit of $0.48 a share, a 32.4% decline from the company's actual earnings for the same quarter a year ago. The reported results will probably affect the stock price in the short term.

The rich dividend, the fact that the company consistently has raised dividend payments and that the future yield is greater than the five-year average yield, the solid earnings growth prospects, and the fact that the stock is in an uptrend are all factors that make MCY stock quite attractive.

Altria Group Inc. (NYSE:MO)

Altria Group, Inc., through its subsidiaries, engages in the manufacture and sale of cigarettes, smokeless products, and wine in the United States and internationally.

Altria Group has a trailing P/E of 17.18 and a very low forward P/E of 13.77. The average annual earnings growth estimates for the next five years is at 7.47%. The forward annual dividend yield is very high at 4.97%, and the payout ratio is at 83%.

The MO stock price is 2.10% above its 20-day simple moving average, 3.46% above its 50-day simple moving average and 7.07% above its 200-day simple moving average. That indicates a short-term, mid-term and long-term uptrend.

Altria Group will report its latest quarterly financial results on April 25. MO is expected to post a profit of $0.53 a share, a 8.2% rise from the company's actual earnings for the same quarter a year ago. The reported results will probably affect the stock price in the short term.

The cheap valuation metrics, the rich dividend, the solid earnings growth prospects, and the fact that the stock is in an uptrend are all factors that make MO stock quite attractive.

Old Republic International Corporation (NYSE:ORI)

Old Republic International Corporation, through its subsidiaries, engages in underwriting insurance products primarily in the United States and Canada.

Old Republic International has a very low debt (total debt to equity is only 0.16) and it has a forward P/E of 16.01. The price to free cash flow for the trailing 12 months is very low at 9.48, and the average annual earnings growth estimates for the next five years is at 10.00%. The price-to-sales ratio is very low at 0.80, and the price to book value is only 0.92. The forward annual dividend yield is very high at 5.62%. The annual rate of dividend growth over the past five years was at 2.38%, and over the past ten years was quite high at 7.74%.

The ORI stock price is 0.56% above its 20-day simple moving average, 5.44% above its 50-day simple moving average and 26.88% above its 200-day simple moving average. That indicates a short-term, mid-term and long-term uptrend.

Old Republic will report its latest quarterly financial results on April 22. ORI is expected to post a profit of $0.04 a share, a $0.05 rise from the company's actual earnings for the same quarter a year ago. The reported results will probably affect the stock price in the short term.

The cheap valuation metrics, the rich dividend, the solid earnings growth prospects, and the fact that the stock is in an uptrend are all factors that make ORI stock quite attractive.

PPL Corporation (NYSE:PPL)

PPL Corporation, an energy and utility holding company, engages in the generation, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity to wholesale and retail customers in the United States and the United Kingdom.

PPL Corporation has a very low trailing P/E of 12.25 and a very low forward P/E of 14.75. The forward annual dividend yield is quite high at 4.61%, and the payout ratio is at 55%. The annual rate of dividend growth over the past five years was at 1.84%, and over the past ten years was quite high at 6.66%.

The PPL stock price is 2.80% above its 20-day simple moving average, 4.30% above its 50-day simple moving average and 10.49% above its 200-day simple moving average. That indicates a short-term, mid-term and long-term uptrend.

PPL will report its latest quarterly financial results on May 01. PPL is expected to post a profit of $0.68 a share, a 4.2% decline from the company's actual earnings for the same quarter a year ago. The reported results will probably affect the stock price in the short term.

The compelling valuation metrics, the rich dividend, the fact that the company has consistently raised dividend payments, and the fact that the stock is in an uptrend are all factors that make PPL stock quite attractive.
