In an effort to jump-start its enterprise business, Nortel (NRTLQ.PK) said it’s “getting back to the basics” by “bringing out innovative products that add value”.
John McHugh, Nortel’s vice-president of enterprise data solutions, unveiled the new approach yesterday at the Interop conference where Nortel introduced the VSP 9000 and a new secure router, the Nortel Secure Router 2300.
While it’s difficult to get a handle on how successful Nortel is going to be with the new approach, it is interesting to see the company trying to forge ahead at a time when there’s so much uncertainty about its future, including the much-speculated sale of the enterprise business to players such as Avaya or Siemens.
The reality is Nortel has no choice if it wants to keep the various business units moving forward so they can be sold at the highest price possible, or kept within the fold as viable operations.
Things such as a new approach to enterprise and a new NOC in India stand out from the crowd. But maybe they’re indications that Nortel is still kicking despite its woes.
