There are currently 1,483 stocks in the Russell 3,000 that are up year to date, 134 are up more than 100%, and 38 are up more than 200%. When we're looking for momentum stocks to trade for our money management clients or our Bespoke Premium Model Stock Portfolio, an easy place to start a filter is by looking at the top performing stocks year to date. If you're looking to filter through some potential trades this weekend, below we highlight the Russell 3,000 stocks that are up more than 200% so far in 2009. These stocks have the best relative strength in the index, and have no doubt gotten the attention of other traders as they have outperformed. Dollar Thrifty (DTG) is up the most at 680%, followed by Providence Service (the Obama stock), Avis Budget (CAR), Borders Group (BGP), and Stein Mart (SMRT).

Most of the stocks in this list are hugely overvalued and have serious liabilities and horrendous fundamentals. Take a look at their balance sheets and seriously try to tell me that these companies are worth those valuations. This reads to me like a list of ideal short targets ...

Missing_Link, very true. But if you look at some of the names - for example CAR- quite a few were down more than 95% from their 2 year highs. In other words, people figured the company was going bankrupt. For CAR, $0.40 to $4.55 is a violent move up, but the stock is still 85% below it's 2 year high.

The lesson here is that one should not jump off a pancake, nor short penny stocks.
