Luminex Corporation (NSDQ: LMNX), a Texas-based maker of multiplexed research tools, has opened a Shanghai office that will serve as the company’s operations center for the Asia Pacific region. The company said demand in China for its products was both strong and growing. The new facility will include office and training lab space.
According to Luminex, China is Asia’s second largest market for clinical laboratory equipment. Worldwide, laboratory equipment revenues are increasing at a 15%-20% annual rate, but China is one of the more dynamic markets.
Luminex’s xMAP technology uses an open-architecture design to combine proven research technologies. xMAP color-codes tiny beads, called microspheres, into 100 distinct sets. Each bead set can be coated with a reagent specific to a particular bioassay. Within the Luminex compact analyzer, lasers excite the internal dyes that identify each microsphere particle and also any reporter dye captured during the assay. Many readings are made on each bead set. This allows multiplexing of up to 100 unique assays within a single sample.
In addition to its Austin, Texas home base, Luminex has previously established offices in Toronto, Canada and Oosterhout, The Netherlands.
