eBay discusses comparison shopping

eBay (ticker: EBAY) CFO Rajiv Dutta presented at the Deutsche Bank Securities Media Conference on June 8th. Here's what he had to say about eBay's acquisition of Shopping.com (ticker: SHOP):

At a very high level, it is actually all about following our community and listening to them. So number one, it gives our sellers a new channel. And if you think about in the U.S., a quarter of everything that is being bought and sold is taking place on the eBay website. This is the single largest density of commerce on the net that is taking place. And our goal is to leverage that across different channels, and Shopping.com actually gives eBay sellers that opportunity.

The second is increasingly our sellers are selling new in-season products… which requires a different channel, a different interface and a different experience... And this is actually made possible by the fact that the Internet as an overall distribution channel for goods is maturing… Mainstream consumers are coming and buying online… this has gone from young male…medium to… a very broad demographic medium, and… we are seeing… more women buying online and… rapid growth in categories such health and beauty and home.

So Shopping.com I think is very much consistent with what has happening on the Internet and, therefore, what our sellers have been doing.
