At the start of the year Starbucks (SBUX) announced that it would close 300 underperforming company operated stores, 200 of which were in the U.S., its short base has risen 76.2% over the last three months to 4.02%. Over the same period, SBUX's share price has risen 78.35%.
McDonald's Corp. (MCD) said today that its same-store sales climbed 5.1 percent in May, boosted by strong international sales but weighed down by slower sales growth in the U.S. The short base (as measured by Percent Shares Outstanding on Loan) in MCD is low at only 0.55%.
Restaurateurs’ Chipotle Mexican (CMG) and P.F. Chang’s China Bistro Inc (PFCB) are the most popular shorts within the sector, with a short base of 16.17% and 26.32% respectively.
