June 12th was the short-term peak for equity markets, and the average stock in the Russell 1,000 is now down 6.64% since then. Below we highlight the 30 worst performing stocks in the Russell 1,000 over the same time period. Half of the 30 worst performing stocks are in the Energy sector, so that is a good sign as to where the biggest declines have come. Patriot Coal (PCX) and Hercules Offshore (HERO) are down the most since 6/12 with declines of more than 37%. ETFC is down the third most with a decline of 36.55%, followed by LIZ, MEE, WTI, WLL, and VHI.
Eighty-six percent of stocks in the Russell 1,000 are down since June 12th, so breadth has been undeniably ugly.
