About the author: From Bespoke:

Investors looking to get long some momentum stocks should take a look at the table below showing the best performing stocks in the Russell 3,000 year to date. These stocks are all up more than 200% in 2009 and are obviously showing relative strength versus the overall market.

Dollar Thrifty Automotive (DTG) is the best performing stock year to date with a gain of 1,197%! Borders Group (BGP) ranks second with a gain of 777% (lucky numbers?), followed by Avis Budget (CAR), Stein Mart (SMRT), and Providence Service Corp (PRSC). PALM is also on the list with a gain of 428% year to date. Its gain of $2.20 Friday moved it into the number nine slot.

Good ole, Bespoke: "buy high and sell low" and never state things as opinions just make vague suggestions that suggest and opinion that can be denied later on.

These people are the Clintons of finance. Right up there with Cramer.

Of what use is such a list? There is no analysis of any of the companies listed. They are the output of a simple screen that anyone could run: "YTD price up > 200%."

Important questions regarding company performance, safety, recent trends (a company might have gone up 300% and then dropped back to 200%), financial metrics, and the like are all ignored. Several of the stocks listed are penny-ante bets that have gyrated all over the place. This snapshot just happened to capture them on an up day.

What concerns me is that Bespoke has more than 2100 followers. I hope that they all do their own analysis and don't treat lists like this as anything more than a simple starting point for more research.
