Quick news/analysis:
- Answers.com more popular than Wikipedia? (GRU) Users of social bookmarking service del.icio.us seem to prefer
Answers.com (owned and operated by Gurunet, ticker: GRU) than Wikipedia
and other search services. According to a post on Search Blog (a site dedicated to the bull case on GRU), Answers.com has been bookmarked by more del.icio.us users than Wikipedia, Ask.com, A9.com, MSN Search and Yahoo! Search, but trails Google. Comment: How to explain the disparity between del.icio.us bookmarks and traffic stats? Perhaps del.icio.us users don't bookmark the most popular sites because they are so frequently used that they are easy to remember.
- Netflix launches ad sales program (NFLX) Netflix announced that it will sell ads on its web site, in customer emails, and on the envelopes it uses to deliver DVDs. Bear Stearns estimated (via Forbes) that ad sales could add $0.06 to $0.08 to Netflix' EPS in 2006. Comment: Ads for movies at the point of rental or ticket purchase are highly targeted and effective, and should therefore be profitable without detracting from the user experience. Movie ads on Netflix's website should contain a "Rent Now" button.
