Marvell Technology Group (NASDAQ:MRVL) is an engineering-driven fabless semiconductor firm that offers a wide variety of products into a number of end markets including networking, storage, and mobile/wireless products. Unfortunately, for investors, 2012 was rather rough for Marvell as almost everything that could go wrong did in fact go wrong. In particular, the firm's heavy reliance on its storage semiconductor segment (which largely power hard disk drives and solid state drives that go into PCs) led to miss after miss during 2012. As if that weren't enough, Marvell went to trial for - and then lost - a patent suit against Carnegie Mellon University in which the firm was ordered to pay $1.17B in fines.
