American Capital (NASDAQ:ACAS) is a business development company, or BDC, that invests in private equity, senior debt, and other special situation investments. American Capital is also engaged in the asset management business and is the external manager of well known mREITs American Capital Agency Corp.(NASDAQ:AGNC) and American Capital Mortgage Investment Corp. (NASDAQ:MTGE). Since May, American Capital's share price has fallen about 12%. Unlike nearly all BDCs, American Capital does not pay a dividend and instead uses its earnings to fuel share repurchases.
