Recent talks by Bernanke and the Fed governors have apparently spooked people about interest rates. As a consequence. many preferred stocks had their prices lowered and represent good buys. There is a list below to consider buying for their rate of return and possible capital gains.

ABR-B is a 7.75% cumulative preferred stock of Arbor Realty Trust. (CUSIP: 038292370) It is currently selling around $24.00 per share which lifts the return to 8%. Arbor (NYSE:ABR) is a mortgage REIT and as such is vulnerable to interest rates. Therefore, this issue needs to be watched if rates begin to rise quickly.

ARR-B is a 7.875% cumulative preferred stock of Armour Residential REIT. (CUSIP: 042315408) It also is selling for around $24.00 per share which lifts the return to 8%. Armour (NYSE:ARR) is also a mortgage REIT and is also vulnerable to changing interest rates.

NNN-E is a 5.70% cumulative preferred stock of National Retail Properties. (CUSIP: 637417809) This preferred stock is selling for around $22.75 per share which lifts the return to about 6.25%. National Retail Properties (NYSE:NNN) is a REIT that acquires, owns and develops retail properties in the US.

BXP-B is a 5.25% cumulative preferred stock of Boston Properties. (CUSIP: 101121408) This preferred stock is selling for around $24.25 per share which lifts the return to about 5.4%. Boston Properties (NYSE:BXP) is a REIT that owns and develops office properties.

DDR-K is a 6.25% cumulative preferred stock of DDR Corp. (CUSIP: 23317H805) This preferred stock is selling for around $23.50 per share which lifts the return to about 6.6%. DDR Corp. (NYSE:DDR) is a REIT that owns and develops shopping centers in the US.

DX-B is a 7.625% cumulative preferred stock of Dynex Capital Inc. (CUSIP: 26817Q803) This preferred stock is selling for around $24.00 per share which lifts the return to about 7.9%. Dynex Capital Inc. (NYSE:DX) is another mortgage REIT which means one must watch interest rates closely.

LHO-I is a 6.375% cumulative preferred stock of LaSalle Hotel Properties. (CUSIP: 517942801) This preferred stock is selling for around $22.75 per share which lifts the return to about 7%. La Salle Hotel Properties (NYSE:LHO) is a REIT that owns and leases upscale and luxury hotel properties in major urban and resort centers in the US.

MITT-B is an 8% cumulative preferred stock of AG Mortgage Investment Trust Inc. (CUSIP: 001228303) This preferred stock is selling for around $24.00 per share which lifts the return to about 8.3%. AG Mortgage Investment Trust Inc. (NYSE:MITT) is another mortgage REIT that needs watching as interest rates change.

NLY-D is a 7.5% cumulative preferred stock of Annaly Capital Management. (CUSIP: 035710805) This preferred stock is selling for around $24.50 per share which lifts the return to about 7.6%. Annaly Capital Management (NYSE:NLY) is another mortgage REIT that needs watching as interest rates change.

NRF-D is an 8.5% cumulative preferred stock of Northstar Realty Finance Corp. (CUSIP: 66705V209) This preferred stock is selling for just under $25.00 per share which offers an 8.5% return. Northstar Realty Finance Corp. (NYSE:NRF) is another mortgage REIT that needs the same awareness as the others mentioned earlier.

PSA_W is a 5.2% cumulative preferred stock of Public Storage Inc. (74460W875) This preferred stock is selling for around $23.20 per share which lifts the return to about 5.6%. Public Storage Inc. (NYSE:PSA) is a REIT that engages in the purchase, ownership and operation of self-storage facilities in the US and Europe.

PSB-V is a 5.7% cumulative preferred stock of PS Business Parks Inc. (CUSIP: 69360J644) This preferred stock is selling for around $23.50 per share which lifts the return to about 6%. PS Business Parks Inc. (NYSE:PSB) is a REIT that owns, operates and leases office and industrial space on the east and west coasts of the US.

RSO-B is an 8.25% cumulative preferred stock of Resource Capital Corp. (CUSIP: 76120W500) This preferred stock is selling for around $$24.40 per share which lifts the return to about 8.4%. Resource Capital Corp. (NYSE:RSO) is a REIT which operates as a specialty finance company that provides loans and mortgages for commercial concerns in the US.

Conclusion

The list above is a good starting place to start researching various preferred shares to juice up your portfolio's rate of return. Fed comments have opened an opportunity for those who, like me, think that investors' responses were a bit overdone.
