I thought I'd take a look at the best performers of the past 4 weeks. We have sold off many stocks the past 3 weeks in which the valuation jumped 25-35%+ so I was curious how common these types of moves have been. The answer - quite! This data will exclude week 1 of the 5 week rally when many stocks made large oversold reversals. From there, another 81 names over $750M in market cap have been able to tack on at least 35%.
The criteria for this list are
- Market capitalization $750 Million+
- Average trading volume 200K+
- Stock price $10+
- Return of 35%+
Please note AIG is only on this list due to a huge reverse split... otherwise it would not have made the stock price requirement (which is there to exclude nanny state companies like AIG). The stocks in bold are positions in the portfolio. There are some remarkable performances off the March bottom in car rental companies i.e. Avis (CAR). Overall the list is dominated by "early cycle recovery" stocks (retail, industrial), along with the home builders, Las Vegas casinos, REITs, and strangely, coal names. We covered (short) a few of the REITs on this list (thankfully) a few months ago...

Even if you use the old standard that the market looks six months out, can anyone see improvement of many of these companie's businesses in that period? In even one year?
Clothing? Paper? REITS? Hotels? Again WTF!?
(remember Billy Crystal on SNL "It is better to loook good than to feel good?")

people try to short stocks on fundamentals in a technically based market. Momentum feeds on itself
Until it doesnt - and then the bottoms fall out, and some of these stocks will hit major air pockets. But you have to survive to be around to see it !:)

Most are still more than 30% below their former 'high' and may not see that point again for years.
And, increased revenues and stock prices, 6-12 months following major reductions or restructuring (CBT/GT/R/..) is expected , and should not be interpreted as a 'turn around' or a sign to buy for a portfolio holding.
Take your money and run.
Thanks again. Much appreciated.
