Green Plains Renewable Energy (NASDAQ:GPRE) has had a stellar 2013 so far, delivering a return of 118% to its investors since January 1 (and of 330% since this date last year). Its returns have been especially notable in light of the uneven performance of other dedicated ethanol producers (see chart), while REX American Resources (NYSE:REX) is up 86% for the year, Pacific Ethanol and Biofuel Energy are down 13% and 28%, respectively.
