Record net inflows of $41.13 billion and strong market performance in July helped U.S. listed ETF and ETP assets reach $1.535 trillion, a new record high, according to ETFGI's recent Global ETF and ETP industry insights report. There were 1,491 ETFs/ETPs, from 55 providers listed on 3 exchanges in the U.S. at the end of July 2013.

"Dovish comments from the Fed and positive market performance encouraged investors to put net inflows of US$41.13 billion back into the market through ETFs/ETPs" according to Deborah Fuhr, Managing Partner at ETFGI.

Year to date (YTD) net inflows into U.S. listed ETFs/ETPs are at a record level of $115.83 billion, significantly above the $91.98 billion at this time in 2012. Net new inflows of $41.13 billion into U.S. listed ETFs and ETPs in July beat the prior record of net new inflows of $37.76 billion set in September 2012.

Equity flows

In July 2013, equity ETFs/ETPs saw net inflows of $37.32 billion. North American/US equity ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with US$32.13 billion, followed by European equity indices with $2.08 billion, and developed Asia Pacific equity with US$1.42 billion.

In the first seven months of 2013, equity ETFs/ETPs gathered net inflows of $113.75 billion. North American/US equity ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows yea to date with $91.95 billion, followed by developed Asia Pacific equity with $13.91 billion, and global (ex-US) equity with $9.47billion, while emerging market equity ETFs/ETPs experienced the largest net outflows YTD with
$9.693 billion.

Fixed Income flows

In July 2013, fixed income ETFs/ETPs saw net inflows of $4.39 billion. High yield ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with $2.83 billion, followed by government bond with $1.65 billion, and corporate bond with $650 billion, while inflation ETFs/ETPs experienced the largest net outflows with $562 million.

In the first seven months of 2013, fixed income ETFs/ETPs have gathered net inflows of $10.78 billion. Government bond ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows YTD with $5.40 billion, followed by high yield with $4.10 billion, and corporate bond with $3.58 billion, while inflation ETFs/ETPs experienced the largest net outflows YTD with $3.64 billion followed by emerging bonds with $2.15 billion in net outflows.

Commodity flows

In July 2013, commodity ETFs/ETPs saw net outflows of $1.16 billion. Precious metals ETFs/ETPs experienced the largest net outflows with $1.01 billion, followed by energy with $132 million, and agriculture ETFs/ETPs with $127 million, while broad commodity gathered the largest net inflows with $180 million.

Year to date through the end of July 2013, commodity ETFs/ETPs have seen net outflows of $20.46 billion. Precious metals ETFs/ETPs experienced the largest net outflows YTD with $20.31 billion, followed by energy with $1.39 billion, and agriculture with $669 million, while broad commodity ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows YTD with $1.94 billion.

U.S. ETF Providers

SPDR ETFs ranks first based on July net inflows with US$17.7 billion, and fourth YTD with US$11.8 billion. Meanwhile, Vanguard ranks first based on net inflows YTD with US$33.18 billion, and third in July with US$6.86 billion. iShares ranks in second place for both July and YTD net inflows, with US$8.34 billion and US$20.66 billion, respectively. WisdomTree and PowerShares rank in third and fifth place in YTD net inflows with US$11.85 billion and US$9.61 billion, respectively.
