Barnes and Noble (BKS) is set to make history at a “major event” in New York City next week. And even though the invitation doesn’t offer any hints of what’s coming, many expect that it will be a book reader of its own, according to a post on CNET.
It would only make sense that B&N, which launched its own book-reading software back in July, would be eyeing an electronic book reader to rivals Amazon and Sony.
The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the company was working on its own reader. It has already struck deals to serve as the digital bookstore for e-readers made by other companies, such as Plastic Logic, CNET reported.
The announcement will be made Oct. 20, two days before Microsoft arrives in New York to formally announce Windows 7.

...who cares?...if it's anything like that Plastic Logic gizmo, it's bound to flop...I've never seen anything as dumb as that device...more to the point, how do they plan to compete with Amazon?...on performance?...don't see anything in the descriptions that would suggest their device will be much more than a Kindle 2 knock off...discounts on books?...can they afford to do any better than Amazon in that respect...I just discovered last night that Amazon is now offering FREE books to Kindle users...not just 100 year old expired copyright stuff either but books published within the past few years...regardless, Amazon is king of the hill...I don't see BKS as becoming anything but a "wannabe" amongst many...Oct 14 01:31 PM | Link | Reply
