Lots of chatter this morning about the increasing size of the Apple (AAPL) cash hoard, at least as measured by cash and marketable securities. Here is a graph of Apple's Smaug-esque hoard's growth over the last six years (via Gridstone):

    And the chart is wrong - you need to include long term marketable securities which are viewed as cash but only reported as "long" term because they mature beyond a year. The true figure is around $34B. With this much cash, doesn't it make sense to buy some securities due beyond a year? Of course it does.
