ETF Market Direction Summary: 10-26-2009
U.S. Equities: Stocks closed down for their 2nd consecutive trading session as they gave up their initial gains after the first 3 hours of trading. Many label a rising dollar as the culprit for Monday’s selloff, but other factors weighed in as well:
- Investors are concerned that the $8,000 home buyer tax credit will be phased out for first time buyers. Economists and market bulls have somewhat painted themselves into a corner by declaring the end of the recession. If they still hold on to this argument, extending the tax credit becomes a tough sell to those in Congress.
- Analyst Dick Bove took a shining to more financial stocks with his axe by downgrading Fifth Third Bancorp (FITB), Suntrust (STI), and US Bancorp (USB). He also projects Bank of America (BAC) needing to raise $45bn in order for it to pay off its TARP obligations.
- The VIX, i.e. market volatility indicator, exploded +9.16% and hit a new 5 day high at $24.31, which allowed it to reverse its short-term downtrend.
On a more positive note for the retail industry, Radio Shack (RSH) posted sales well above consensus estimates in its quarterly report. The stock increased +15.90%.
In terms of market direction trends, the S&P 500 joined the IWM in the short-term downtrend status club. Major sectors and key industries that also incurred downgrades to their trends were XLY, XLK, XLE, XLU, XLV, OIH, and RKH. For anyone interested in support levels for the S&P 500 ETF (SPY), I have posted a brief technical analysis chart report.
International Equities: In the Americas, the ILF and EWZ were downgraded; Europe ETF downgrades occurred in EWG, RSX, IEV, VGK; Asia-Pacific downgrades were in EWM and VNM. Emerging Markets downgrades were in EEM, GMF, GUR, and GML.
Commodities: The dollar continues to negatively impact some commodity prices. The short-term trends for the JJG and CRBQ were downgraded.
Forex: Finally, the dollar (UUP) has broken out to a new short-term uptrend while taking down the FXE, FXF, FXA, FXM, FXY, and CEW. There appears to be no major fundamental catalyst for the dollar’s upside move. I would regard this as a technically oversold bounce and remain suspicious of its sustainability unless there is a major policy change from the Fed. Next week’s FOMC policy statement should give us more visibility.
Bonds: Rates continue to rise in the market despite the selling in equities. There are no significant changes to the trends for bond ETFs.
Real Estate: There are no significant changes to the trends for real estate ETFs. The weakest members of this group remain the ITB and XHB, both proxies for homebuilders. Given the uncertainty surrounding the extension of the home buyers tax credit, they are likely to remain in limbo. If the extension is not granted, then I would expect the bears to launch a more aggressive assault on these two funds.
ETF 5 Day New Highs: U.S. Equties (VXZ); International Equities (FXI*, GMF); Commodities (DBB*, DBC, JJC*, UGA*); Forex (BZF, UUP); Bonds (JNK*); Real Estate (ICF, IYR, REZ). (Note * denotes 250 day new high)
ETF 5 Day New Lows: U.S. Equities (DIA, SPY, QQQQ, IWM, IYZ, XLB, XLE, XLF, XLI, XLK, XLP, XLU, XLV, BBH, ITA, IYT, OIH, PPH, RKH, SEA, SMH); International Equities (EWC, EWW, ISI, EWG, EWQ, VGK, IEV, RSX, EWU, EWA, EWH, EWJ, EWS, EWM, IF, VNM, GAF, GUR, EEM, EWX); Commodities (CRBQ, GLD, SLV, UNG, USO); Forex (CEW, FXA, FXB, FXC, FXE, FXF, FXM, FXY, ICN, XRU); Bonds (AGG, IEF, MBB, SHY, TIP, TLT, WIP); Real Estate (ITB, REM). (Note * denotes 250 day new low)
