The Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSEARCA:GDX) outshined all other commodity ETPs in both inflows and performance in the week ending Thursday, Sept. 19, as overall net inflows pushed commodity ETFs up nearly 1% in total assets with a gain of $1.31 billion. Inflows by sector were led by precious metals, which yanked in $861 million, followed by energy piling on $549 million.

However, all other sectors saw net outflows, with broad market (multicommodity) losing $81 million; agriculture shedding $19 million and industrial metals coming up $3.36 million short. Commodity ETPs include exchange-traded funds (ETFs), exchange-traded notes (ETNs) and exchange-traded vehicles (ETVs).

ETF Inflows/Outflows

It’s no surprise that funds from the precious metals and energy sectors monopolized the biggest gainers list, led by massive inflows into GDX, which piled on $1.31 billion and increased AUM by just under 15%, while Energy Select SPDR (NYSEARCA:XLE) scooped up $364 million, SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production (NYSEARCA:XOP) brought in $164 million, iShares U.S. Energy (NYSEARCA:IYE) grabbed $52 million, and the iShares Silver Trust (NYSEARCA:SLV) saw net inflows of $32 million.

Despite precious metals and energy raking in assets, the biggest asset bleeders of the week also belonged to those sectors, led once again by the SPDR Gold ETF (NYSEARCA:GLD), which shed $202 million, followed by SPDR S&P Metals and Mining (NYSEARCA:XME) losing $76 million; United States Natural Gas (NYSEARCA:UNG) pushing out $41 million; Market Vectors Oil Services (NYSEARCA:OIH) dropping $28 million; and the VelocityShares 3X Long Natural Gas ETN (NYSEARCA:UGAZ) seeing outflows of $21 million.

ETP Performance

Miners rallied from last week’s performance losses, led by the biggest commodity asset gainer, GDX, which tagged on 8.25%, as PureFunds ISE Junior Silver (Small Cap Miners/Explorers) (NYSEARCA:SILJ) jumped 8%; Global X PURE Gold Miners (NYSEARCA:GGGG) grew 7.96%; iShares MSCI Global Gold Miners (NYSEARCA:RING) rallied 7.77%; and the PowerShares Global Gold and Precious Metals fund (NASDAQ:PSAU) increased 7.45% .

A mixed bag of ETPs underperformed, led by the iPath Global Carbon ETN (NYSEARCA:GRN) sinking 4.51%; iPath Dow Jones-UBS Coffee Total Return ETN (NYSEARCA:JO) retreating 4.28%; United States Diesel-Heating Oil (NYSEARCA:UHN) losing 3.57%; iPath Pure Beta Grains ETN (NYSEARCA:WEET) sliding 2.70%; and the United States Gasoline fund (NYSEARCA:UGA) rolling back 2.67%.
