ETF Market Direction Summary: 11-02-2009

In answer to last week’s worry over a sustainable economic recovery, Monday’s key economic data points served as bullish catalysts for the day’s positive trading session:

  1. October’s ISM Manufacturing report jumped to 55.7 vs. consensus estimates at 53.0 and previous month at 52.6
  2. Construction Spending in September rose 0.8% vs. consensus estimates at -0.2%
  3. Pending Home Sales increased September by 6.1% m/m
  4. Positive earnings surprises from Ford (F) and Humana (HUM)
  5. Carryover momentum from China’s positive PMI report confirming expansion in manufacturing and exports

Casting a shadow over the market, but failing to sustain sellers, were the following bearish events:

  1. CIT’s filing for bankruptcy
  2. Jon Greenlee, Fed Reserve Associate Director/Division of Banking Supervision and Regulation issued statements that conditions for the banking industry remain far from robust and continue to deteriorate as weakness in housing is impacting residential and construction loans.

Market momentum has ceased its downward trajectory for now and a few equity sectors and industries are valiantly fighting to maintain intermediate uptrend support levels. However, stocks still remain in correction mode, so those waiting to deploy fresh capital may want to remain neutral until it ends while existing longs should focus on risk management and/or hedging if necessary.
