  • i don't know where these numbers came from but i'm skeptical. for example, it says that fdo closed 160 stores in 2009. i know this isn't true. from their press release when they announced 2009 earnings, they only closed 96, but opened 180 for a net of 84 opened. i'd be surprised if this is the only company for which this is the case.

  • Despite your fine pedigrees boys, I suggest you go back to the black-tie party. There is No analysis here; not even an opinion regarding the relevance of these figures - a waste of my time. So times are tough for retailers; tell SA readers something they haven't heard already, from countless sources for the past 18 months.

  • I think Pep Boys (PBY) closed or sold off several outlets, but it's not listed.

  • I agree with matthutch and swingtimer. FDO's business is booming. There are some winners in this recession. Also, SA should not allow the posting of raw data like this, regardless of whether it contains errors as this one does. If I want to find out what stores closed in 2009, I can Google it. I personally don't like to get my information from about.com anyway. Thumbs down on this article - a function desperately needed on SA.

  • As mentioned by others, the figures are suspect. Are these gross closings, or net of openings? What about relocations? Closings can be a sign of trouble, or effective management that knows when it is time to move the store to a better part of town, abandon a dying region, or prune for growth. You have to be very careful how you interpret this data.
