Of the five companies listed, two are energy companies, two are mining companies and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is a hi-tech powerhouse. The growing prominence of emerging market companies is shown by the presence of the two Brazilian companies and Gazprom (OTCPK:OGZPY) of Russia.

I wanted to see how much the common stocks of these companies would have returned had an investor invested in them 5 years ago. The table below shows the returns based on data provided by S&P:

S.No. Company Ticker Growth of $10,000 invested 5 years ago as of Dec 26,2009
1 BHP Billiton * BHP, BBL, $30,796.00
2 Apple AAPL $63,315.00
3 Petrobras Brasileiro PBR $56,305.00
4 Gazprom OTCPK:OGZPY N/A
5 Vale VALE $47,178.00

Note: Past performance is no guarantee of future results

Clearly US-based Apple had the best performance growing a $10K investment into $63,315 in just 5 years. Petrobras (NYSE:PBR) and Vale (NYSE:VALE) also have had incredible runs in the same period. It must be noted that miner BHP Billiton trades on the NYSE as BHP Billiton PLC (NYSE:BBL) and BHP Billiton Ltd (NYSE:BHP). The amount noted above is for BBL.
