Slowly but surely, cereal continues to decline across the United States. While the final numbers aren't in yet, some anticipate that cereal sales will fall about 2% this year in the United States. There are several reasons behind this decline.
For one, only 48% of Americans eat breakfast. Americans simply don't have the time to eat, and frankly, many people have a difficult time stomaching food in the morning. Even more striking, 64% of Millennials and Gen-X'ers do not eat breakfast in the morning. This trend may eventually reverse itself, but for the time being, it puts tremendous pressure on the entire breakfast food segment.
