S&P 500 Sector Buy and Sell Ratings

Below we take a look at the percentage of analyst buy and sell ratings for the ten S&P 500 sectors. Here's a number that will get you shaking your head. There are a total of 10,112 analyst ratings on the stocks in the S&P 500. Analysts have to make a living too! There are 5,331 buy ratings, 536 sell ratings, and 4,245 hold ratings.

The technology sector has the highest percentage of buy ratings at 58.7%. Health Care ranks second at 56%, followed by Consumer Discretionary (55.7%), Industrials (55.4%), and Energy (55.4%). The Utilities sector has the lowest percentage of buy ratings at 41.9%. And analysts are still bearish on the Financial sector with only 43.8% buy ratings and 8.8% sell ratings. Its percentage of sell ratings is by far the highest of any sectors. Health Care has the lowest percentage of sell ratings at just 3.7%.

As shown below, Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) is tied with Thermo Fisher Scientific (NYSE:TMO) for the highest percentage of buy ratings in the S&P 500. Of the 48 analysts covering Apple, 93.8% have buy ratings on the stock, while no analysts have a sell rating. With nearly all buys and no sells, analysts can't really get anymore bullish. Other names on the list of stocks with the highest percentage of buy ratings include Mastercard (NYSE:MA), Visa (NYSE:V), JP Morgan (NYSE:JPM), Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), and Halliburton (NYSE:HAL).

Eastman Kodak (EK) has the highest percentage of sell ratings at 50%. Sears Holdings (NASDAQ:SHLD) has the second highest at 42.9%, followed by TEG, DO, TIE, and AIV. While analysts are bearish on the names below, at least they have a lot of upside.
