Yahoo! (ticker: YHOO) reported Q1 2005 results yesterday. Here is what Yahoo! Chairman and CEO Terry Semel had to say about the company's business activities in China:

....We also expanded our international search marketing business, launching in Hong Kong, increasing our capabilities in Korea, and starting in market tests in China.

(Quotes are from the CCBN StreetEvents transcript.)

Comment
: Yahoo! continues to avoid substantial discussion of its China activities on quarterly conference calls. (The company had this to say about China on its Q4 2004 conference call.) This, despite frequent assertions on yesterday's call to its tremendous growth overseas. While Yahoo's China operations are still in the early stages, the lack of mention suggests that the company has little good news to report, and is probably still lagging competitors (like Baidu.com and Google (ticker: GOOG)) in the Chinese Internet search market. And what about its online auction business with Sina.com (ticker: SINA)? Again, no mention.

In an interview, however, Yahoo! COO Dan Rosensweig reportedly said that Yahoo's JV with Sina.com (ticker: SINA) is progressing - but it's still early. He avoided comment on speculation of a Yahoo! - Shanda (ticker: SNDA) partnership.
