Energy funds pulled in nearly a half-billion dollars in new inflows, bucking the trend for commodity-related, exchange-traded funds that saw other sectors lose or struggle for investment capital.
Energy funds attracted $478 million in inflows, while industrial metals eked out a $3 million inflow. On the flip side, precious metals saw a $182 million outflow, agriculture lost $90 million and broad market (multicommodity) ETPs shed $5 million.
On the back of the energy inflow, overall commodity-related ETPs had a net inflow of $204 million, bringing total assets under management to $132 billion.
Energy ETPs dominated the individual flows chart, taking all five spots. The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSEARCA:XLE) gained $506 million; VelocityShares 3X Inverse Natural Gas ETN (NYSEARCA:DGAZ) garnered $58 million; ProShares UltraShort DJ-UBS Crude Oil (NYSEARCA:SCO) added $36 million; First Trust ISE-Reverse Natural Gas (NYSEARCA:FCG) saw an inflow of $23 million; and First Trust Energy AlphaDEX (NYSEARCA:FXN) gained $21 million.
Meanwhile, the outflows list featured ETPs from three different sectors. SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEARCA:GLD) was the biggest loser, with a $114 million outflow. Following suit was the United States Natural Gas Fund (NYSEARCA:UNG), which lost $102 million; the Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF (NYSEARCA:MOO), which shed $90 million; the SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF, which had an outflow of $53 million; and the United States Oil Fund (NYSEARCA:USO), which lost $44 million.
In terms of price performance, agriculture and materials were the best performers. The iPath Dow Jones-UBS Coffee Total Return ETN (NYSEARCA:JO) surged 19.2 percent; the PowerShares DB Agriculture Long ETN (NYSEARCA:AGF) spiked 12.5 percent; iPath Dow Jones-UBS Softs Total Return ETN (NYSEARCA:JJS) gained 8.1 percent; Global X China Materials (NYSEARCA:CHIM) jumped 6.3 percent; and the iPath Dow Jones-UBS Nickel Total Return ETN (NYSEARCA:JJN) advanced 6.1 percent.
On the other end of the spectrum, alternative energy funds were the worst performers by far. Guggenheim Solar (NYSEARCA:TAN) lost 7.7 percent; PowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy (NYSEARCA:PBW) fell by 6.6 percent; Market Vectors Solar Energy (NYSEARCA:KWT) shed 6.4 percent; First Trust Nasdaq Clean Edge Green Energy (NASDAQ:QCLN) declined 6 percent; and the Global X Uranium Fund (NYSEARCA:URA) dropped 5.7 percent.
