NIC Inc.: E-Government At Its Best

NIC Inc. (NASDAQ:EGOV) (hereafter "NIC" or "the Company") began life in 1991 as the Kansas Information Consortium, a company that set up and operated the Kansas egovernment portal. By 1997, subsidiaries established portals in Indiana (including a separate portal for Indianapolis and Marion County), Nebraska, Iowa, Virginia and Arkansas; in 1998 the subsidiaries consolidated to form the National Information Consortium.

In 1999 the consortium became the first egovernment company to go public, and in 2002 the company was officially named NIC Inc. By this time it had established its viability as an internet company, having added Idaho, Maine, Utah and Hawaii to its list of clients.
