With so much talk about the Hindenburg Omen, we thought a visualization of 52-week highs and lows might be useful.

Each dot represents a stock in the S&P 500 index, and the size of the dot reflects the size of the stock's market cap. (Note: The Hindeburg Omen is an indicator based on NYSE-listed stocks, so we're not using a complete sample)

On the y-axis, we chart each stock's distance from the 52-week low. The higher the value, the further the stock is from the 52-week low.

On the x-axis, we chart the distance from the 52-week high. The further the stock is to the right, the closer it is to the 52-week high. [click to expand images]



As you can see, most of the S&P 500 stocks are clustered in the bottom right corner. This means that most S&P 500 stocks are 20% or less below their 52-week high, and 40% or less above their 52-week low.

For this visualization, we'll highlight a few companies on the extremes (labeled above). Full analysis follows below.
