SolarWinds: A Great Business Model, And Tremendous Upside

Introduction

SolarWinds (NYSE:SWI) is in the business of selling network management and systems management products to IT professionals. The company was founded in 1999, went public in 2009, and last year recorded $335 million in revenue. SWI has 150,000 customers, including small businesses, large companies, and the public sector.

SWI makes the bulk of its money from the standard license/maintenance model, although more recently the company has started selling some products based on subscriptions. Last year, recurring revenue (maintenance + subscription) amounted to 59% of total revenue.
