When constructing a portfolio for the long term most investors look for stocks that can serve as core positions through all economic cycles. These positions will allow them to sleep at night without fear that some macro event will wipe out part of their retirement in an instant. Often these core positions will share many of the same characteristics: stable cash flows that grow faster than the overall economy, revenues that do not feel the effects of recessions, recurring revenue, strong operating margins, lower risk (although this is extremely subjective) and a dividend, all at a reasonable price.
