I took the liberty of ranking the entire NASDAQ 100 by market capitalization, as of Friday's close, according to the NASDAQ market site. It took about six hours to compile the data, as I could not find a single source that provided the necessary information. With pen and paper in hand, I resorted to the old-school method of screening each of the top 100 listed NASDAQ stocks individually.

For investors new to Sirius XM, I had alerted Satwaves Pro readers several weeks ago that Sirius XM would be eligible for inclusion in the NASDAQ 100, or QQQQ's as it is commonly known. The NASDAQ uses the closing data from the last trading day in October as its guide. In December, the reconstituted list will be officially announced, and the rebalancing itself will occur before the Christmas Holiday. In fact, both Sirius XM and Netflix, which I've written about recently will be added.

There are two tools the NASDAQ uses to determine the market values of companies for the annual review:

  • Share prices as of the last trading day in October (usually the 31st unless the 31st falls on a weekend).
  • Publicly announced share totals as of the last trading day of November (usually the 30th unless it falls on a weekend).
  • Those components that are in the top 100 of all eligible companies at the annual review are retained in the index. Those ranked 101 to 125 are retained only if they were in the top 100 of the previous year's annual review. If they fail to move into the top 100 in the following year's review, they are dropped. Those not ranked in the top 125, are dropped regardless of the previous year's rank.
  • A company will also be dropped if, at the end of two consecutive months, the component fails to have an index weighting of at least one-tenth of a percent. This can occur at any time.

The companies that are dropped are replaced by those who have the largest market value and are not in the index already. Anticipation of these changes can lead to changes in the stock prices of the affected companies. source: Wikipedia

Based on the results below and Sirius XM's $5.83 billion market cap, I can now state unequivocally and without reservation that the NASDAQ will announce Sirius XM's inclusion in the index when it releases the official notice in December. I have highlighted those companies with a lower market cap than Sirius XM in the chart.

Other than Netflix placing higher than Sirius XM, I know of no other company that could displace Sirius XM's pending position in the quad Q's, although I have no ability to screen the entire NASDAQ Composite Index by market cap. Still, allowing for the inclusion of Netflix, Sirius XM will find itself at number 85 of the top 100 listed NASDAQ companies. This provides a significant cushion of 15 spots, just in case there are other NASDAQ listed companies that grew their market caps to more than $6 billion that were not previously listed.
