How Big a Buy is Big Lots?

Big Lots (NYSE: BIG) reported its second quarter earnings for fiscal year 2014 on Friday, 29 August 2014, and it was a tepid picture. The company beat earnings estimates by a penny and reported in-line revenues, but for the day the stock fell 1.8% on several times normal volume.

Clearly, the market did not love the report, though the stock recovered some ground as the day went on. But, then again, traders also did not strongly hate the report, else the stock price would have dropped much more. That kind of mixed response invites a look at the fundamentals to see just what is going on with Big Lots.
