Deal Idea: Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) could boost its business by looking at acquiring software names like SAP (SAP), SAS, Microstrategy (MSTR), Autodesk (ADSK) and Corel (CREL), according to Christopher Baum of Software Advice. "HP is poised to become the world’s most complete supplier of end to end IT infrastructure and business software ... What is missing is software to tie it all together," said Baum.

Cowen & Co. analyst Peter Goldmacher also agrees that HP needs to move more boldly into software. He suggests that potential targets include Symantec (SYMC), Teradata (TDC), Informatica (INFA), BMC Software (BMC), ComVault Systems (CVLT), and Tibco Software (TIBX). A bolder move, according to Goldmacher, would be for HP to pursue Red Hat (RHT). (Seeking Alpha)

Deal Idea: Netflix (NFLX) is looking less like Web TV and more like HBO and wouldn’t it make sense for Time Warner (TWX) to acquire its emerging rival, asked Reuters’ Jeffrey Goldfarb. "But if Netflix is the next HBO — and the distribution medium of the future — then Time Warner might be better off owning it too. It’s a tall order given the adversarial ground staked out by Bewkes and by Netflix’s pricey valuation of 50 times expected earnings. But it could just as easily be that Time Warner can’t afford not to buy Netflix."

Other Deal Activity:

Rumors of a possible suitor for Heritage Oil (OTCPK:HTGLF) have been swirling about the company for weeks, with city gossips claiming Austrian giant OMV (OTCPK:OMVKY) may be mulling a bid. But it was a mystery suitor from Abu Dhabi who was said to have made the informal offer at 425 pence. (Evening Standard)
