Now that earnings season is officially over [it ended yesterday with Wal-Mart's (WMT)report], we can highlight the final list of the best and worst performing stocks on their report days this season.
Below are tables of the 30 best and worst performing stocks on their report days from the list of all US stocks that reported. As shown, Ancestry.com (ACOM) -- which reported on April 28th -- had the best earnings report this season with a one-day gain of 42.55%! ReachLocal (RLOC) ranks second with a gain of 33.57% on April 27th, followed by Bioscrip (BIOS) [31.64%], DynaVox (DVOX) [30.41%], and Select Comfort (SCSS) [30.29%]. These five stocks are the only ones that gained more than 30% on their report days this season.

IntraLinks Holdings (IL) has the depressing distinction of having the worst earnings report this past season with a decline of 32.58% on its report date. Axcelis Tech (ACLS) ranks second with a one-day decline of 28.11%, followed by Timberland (TBL) [-26.27%], SmartHeat (HEAT) [-24.44%], MIPS Tech (MIPS) [-24.06%], and Obagi Medical (-24.03%). Other noteworthy names on the list of earnings season losers include Evergreen Solar (ESLR), OfficeMax (OMX), OpenTable (OPEN), and Akamai (AKAM).
Not one S&P 500 (SPY) company cracked the list of the 30 best performing US stocks on their report days this past earnings season. Supervalu (SVU) was the best performing S&P 500 stock in response to earnings with a one-day gain of 16.85%. Biogen (BIIB) ranks second with a gain of 15.17%, followed by SLM Corp (SLM) [12.79%], Goodyear Tire (GT) [12.04%], Dean Foods (DF) [11.48%], Sysco (SYY) [10.73%], and MetroPCS (PCS) [10.13%]. It's surprising that three of the six best performing S&P 500 stocks on their report days this season come from the Consumer Staples sector. Usually the majority of stocks on this list come from the Technology sector, but not this season.
Akamai (AKAM) was the worst performing S&P 500 stock on its report day this season with a decline of 14.74%. Lexmark (LXK) wasn't far behind with a decline of 14.44%, followed by Teradyne (-12.36%), Broadcom (BRCM) [-12.27%], NVIDIA (NVDA) [-10.93%], and Quanta Services (PWR) [-10.78%]. None of the top seven best performing S&P 500 stocks this earnings season came from the Technology sector, but the top five worst performing S&P 500 stocks this earnings season were in the Technology sector.
