Equity style can significantly impact portfolio performance. The Russell indexes are good benchmarks for measuring the performance of U.S. equity styles.
Russell U.S. equity ETFs address the market need for rational, transparent benchmarks for the industry. The data for 2009 shows that the market share of the Russell Investments family of indexes has increased, while that of its nearest competitor declined—continuing a trend that has been in place for over a decade. Russell Indexes remain the preferred benchmarks for more than 63% of U.S. Institutional equity products.

The mid-cap growth funds seek long term capital appreciation (usually 2 to 5 years). The focus of the funds is to invest in companies which contribute to the U.S. GDP.
The small-cap ETFs are composed of companies with market capitalization of less than $1 billion. Usually the small-cap ETFs provide access to companies which have high Price/Earnings (PE) ratio. Owning growth stocks is undesirable when markets are falling.
